Southerners love to fight about barbecue, and Nashville is no different. But whether you like Memphis-style dry rub or slathering on the sauce, Music City’s got something for everyone. We’ve collected our favorites here, and made you a list via Overlook Maps!
Shotgun Willie’s is the gold standard for brisket in Nashville. They’ve also got pulled pork, smoked chicken, and melt-in-your-mouth ribs, plus dreamy sides like queso mac and the best banana pudding this side of the Red River. Get there early — they’re open 11 a.m.-3 p.m., or until they sell out. — Whitney Pastorek
For real Tennessee barbecue, family-owned Peg Leg Porker serves up traditional West TN-style dry-rubbed ribs that’ll transport you straight to Memphis. All their sides are to die for, but their fried pies? Totally worth the hype! They even put it on their merch: “Our fried pies are like having sex on a rainbow.” — Marie Cecile Anderson

Saap Saap’s pop-up events are where Southern smoked meats and Lao food collide in a beautiful marriage. Chicken wings & red curry! Smoked Gifford’s bologna on Thum Khao Pun! Everything gets served up with a pile of fresh herbs or grilled greens straight from the chefs’ garden — follow them on Instagram to find out where they’ll be. — WP
Martin’s is a true Nashville staple! Locals will tell you that the 12 South location hits different (and better) than the downtown spot. Whether you go for their pulled pork sandwich, brisket tacos, or ribs, it rarely disappoints. It’s the perfect place to show visitors that Nashville knows how to do BBQ right. — Daniel Sumstine
Everywhere you look, there’s a new Edley’s location popping up in town, but what I like most about this Nashville staple is that they’re not afraid to bring the heat! There’s always a little kick to everything, from their Nashville hot links to jalapeno cornbread. Let's get those tourists’ tongues on fire! — MA
This is hands down the best BBQ in town when you’re on the go. Bar-B-Cutie’s drive-thru is faster than most chains — and don’t forget to grab a gallon of their sweet tea to get you through the week! — MA
