One in 10 Americans has unclaimed money waiting to be claimed … and you could be one of them! If an organization like a bank, utility company, or government institution owes you money — think refunds or uncashed paychecks — and can’t find you, they turn over the money to the state.

How do I get it?

The Tennessee Department of Treasury hosts ClaimItTN.gov, a website where you can search for any unclaimed property for yourself, a family member, or a business. You just need the last name or business, and you can narrow down the results by putting in your zip code. If you have property to claim, you’ll enter your information via the website — note that you’ll need to enter a tax ID and sign a legal declaration that it is indeed your money — and receive further instructions via email.

Pro tip: if you changed your last name for any reason, including marriage, search under your previous name as well.

How much will I get?

It depends on the person! In 2024 alone, Tennessee had $203.7 million in unclaimed property, but only $62.6 million was returned.

Is there a deadline?

Nope! You can claim your unclaimed property at any time, at no cost.

Any other tips?

Did you just move to Nashville? Make sure to check if other states you have lived in have your unclaimed property, too.
