It’s time to vote, Nashville! Early voting for the Tennessee 7th Congressional District special election runs Nov. 12-26, with Election Day on Dec. 2. While we weren't set to have any elections this year, that changed when Representative Mark Green retired from Congress in July. Here’s everything you need to know about this special election, from who’s running to whether or not you vote.

What Does Our Congressional Representative Do?

Congressional reps serve as voices for the people in their district in the U.S. House of Representatives. They vote on federal legislation, like President Trump’s recent budget bill, and develop legislation. All bills must pass through Congress before the president can sign them into law. They also provide constituent services, like help with disability insurance or unemployment.

The state of Tennessee divided by county, with colors representing congressional districts.

What Is the 7th Congressional District?

TN-07 encompasses a portion of Davidson County, along with several other Middle Tennessee counties. Before 2022, Nashville had one congressional district, but after Republican gerrymandering, we were split across three. Reps Andy Ogles (TN-05) and John Rose (TN-06) represent the other portions of Davidson County.

Who’s Running?

Democrat Aftyn Behn and Republican Matt Van Epps won their respective primaries, and four other independent candidates are also on the ballot. While we reached out to both Behn and Van Epps for interviews, neither has responded yet.

A social worker and Nashville local, Behn has served in the TN General Assembly since 2023. At this year’s legislative session, Behn proposed bills to eliminate the state’s grocery tax, and to legalize marijuana and use the tax revenue on infrastructure — the “Pot for Potholes Act.” Neither bill passed. In her congressional campaign, she promises to stand against corporate greed, fix roads, and fund hospitals.

A military veteran and former TN General Services Commissioner, Van Epps has received endorsements from President Trump, Governor Bill Lee, and former TN-07 Representative Mark Green. Van Epps promises to advance Trump’s “America First” agenda, keep borders secure, and defend the Second Amendment.
